You Are Our Provider

Standing at the airport, they opened the envelope. It’s a new way to vacation – you pay the money and they surprise you. You have no idea where you are going, what to bring, or how to prepare, you just show up at the airport and go.

The whole point is to be spontaneous and just go, but this planner in me says, “ummmmm no”. Why? Because I worry about where we would stay. I worry about whether or not they will have the things we need if we don’t pack them. I worry about if it will be too quiet in the room since I didn’t bring my noise machine. I worry about if I have warm enough clothes, or dressy enough, or the right shoes. I worry…

12 men have been called out by Jesus to follow Him. They left everything behind and have walked with Jesus, listening and learning while they watched Him and lived their daily lives with Him.

And now, He tells them to go.

“And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. And they went out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.” (Mark 6:8-13)

What should they pack? What should they take with them?

Mark shares with us that Jesus commanded them to go and to only take their staffs. Nothing else. No money. No bag. No food. No extra clothes.

Why?

Where He leads, God would provide.

Can this be true? Can we really trust God to give us these things we need?

As we read in verses 12 and 13, the disciples were accomplishing just what Jesus had sent them to do.

So why do we worry? Why do we think God won’t provide the very things we need?

Many scriptures give reference to the care and provisions that God makes for His people. Philippians 4:19 says “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” This was written by Paul during his imprisonment. This letter was the encourage the believers and thank them for their gift. He, of all people, knew that God would provide all that he needed, no matter where he was or the circumstance.

Do we?

Do we have that faith? That trust that God will supply all of our needs?

Father, help us to trust you. Open our eyes to the magnificent glories of your creation and see how you have met every need accordingly. You are our provider! You have given us all that we need. Jehovah-Jireh! Forgive us when we doubt and when we fail to see the blessings in our midst! Thank you, Lord!
