I love watching my hummingbirds in the mornings. As the sun comes up over the hills and treetops, the small birds zip in and out to the feeder. I have no idea what they do all day, but I know they’re thirsty. They drain that feeder daily, and then, every evening, I fill it back up. Constantly pouring the sweet nectar back into the well.
Soon, the hummingbirds will quit coming to the feeder. It will start with a few, but eventually, there won’t be any hummingbirds flying in to get a drink. They’ll all be gone.
Why?
Winter is coming.
In Arkansas, though, we don’t just jump straight from summer to winter. There’s a season in between.
Fall.
Many people love the fall because of the beauty of the leaves on the trees as they change colors. Or the rich aromas of soups and coffees that fill the air. Or being enveloped on cool days in a big, warm sweater or scarf.
But it’s only for a season.
And then winter will come.
As I was reading this morning in 2 Thessalonians 2, these hummingbirds reminded me of people and the seasons. They reminded me of things that are to come.
“Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” — 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4
Paul was clearing up the confusion about the second coming of Christ. Jesus will return to the earth, and judgment will be poured out on sin. But there are other events that will happen before that day comes.
There will be a great falling away. People will no longer seek the truth, the living water of Jesus.
Why?
Because there will be a man who will rise up in power and entice people away. Perhaps with his beauty, his charisma, his promises of fulfilling the heart’s and mind’s desires. But he will be the man of sin, the son of perdition. He will be everything that is against God. He will be the antichrist, empowered by the great deceiver, our enemy, Satan.
But this great falling away and his rise to power will only be for a season.
Then the Lord will come.
The question is, are we ready?
Those who have been saved are sealed by the Holy Spirit. They will be saved from the judgment God will pour out on the earth and will be taken to Heaven.
Have you ever put your faith in Jesus?
Come to the well. Drink of the living water. He will fill you!
Don’t fear the seasons that are coming. Instead, be busy about the Lord’s business. Do what He has commanded.
Go and make disciples.
Share His truth from His Word.
Let His name be known among the nations.
Help others come to know Him as their Savior and learn how to follow Him.
