Will We Still?

I watched a TV show once where a young lady, soon to get married, hired a private detective to dig into her fiancé’s life. She felt like there was something he was hiding, but she wasn’t quite sure what it was.

Come to find out, he was hiding something… something big.

Although he had just been this average guy, with an average car, job, and home, he wasn’t so average. He was the heir to a large estate and fortune. He was worth millions.

She confronted him about the secret and he was heartbroken. He explained that if he was to marry, he wanted it to be for true and honest love, and not about the money. He wanted to know his relationship was about more than just what she could get from him.

“And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.” (Mark 7:32-37)

Why would Jesus tell them to keep the miracles to themselves? Why wouldn’t He want everyone to hear of these amazing works?

What would they be coming to Him for – the miracle or a true repentant heart seeking a real relationship? Jesus wanted their love and knew they would come to Him only for what they could gain.

Even in my life today, I struggle in this. Am I really willing and able to say I want God more than what He offers me? Natalie Grant came out with a song that says, “help me want the healer, more than the healing”. Can we honestly say that’s what we seek?

Three young men stood before the King, knowing they were facing the flames of the furnace and certain death. And do you remember what they said to King Nebuchadnezzar?

“If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” (Daniel 3:17-18).

Even if…

Will we still love Jesus even if He doesn’t take away the pain?
Will we still love Jesus even if everything we love in this world is stripped from us?
Will we still love Jesus and praise Him if we are diagnosed with a life-threatening disease?

Will we still… even if?

Father- forgive me. Help me to truly desire you more than anything in this world. More than wealth, honor, position, health, or even happiness. God help me to be able to say I will still serve you and love you, even if.
