Who Are You Trusting In?
5983 Views

It’s hard for me to ask for help.

I’ve always done it by myself, whatever it is. It’s more of a challenge when someone tells me I can’t do something, because then I feel the need to prove them wrong.

My attitude becomes, “I want to. I can. I will.”

Anyone else?

But how many times has that gotten us into trouble?

I’m left in an awkward position, trying to get the tote of heavy glassware onto the top shelf, all by myself. Holding it so it won’t fall, and trying to get the strength to give it one big push, I take multiple deep breaths, hoping my hold is just right. I get my legs ready, and I push with all the strength I have, and it gets to the top shelf… and then I’m on a heating pad and nursing a pulled muscle for a few days. But hey, I did it, right?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to do it all on my own and failed. Whether it was moving something heavy, important decisions, or even financially, there have always been times where I found myself in tears, crying out for someone to help me.

It’s not that I didn’t believe there was help. I did. I knew all I had to do was ask. But belief and trust are two different things. Because what I was trusting in was myself.

“I want to. I can. I will.”

But when I am finally stuck, there’s no place to go, there’s nothing I can do to help myself, that’s when I realize, I need help from the One that can.

“And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.”

Luke 4:33-34

Jesus goes to a synagogue, a temple, a place of worship. And there, he meets a man who is possessed by a demon.

A demon is a fallen angel that chose to follow Satan when he believed he could be more powerful than God and should be worshipped. They left heaven with Satan and were cast down to earth.

They are sent to tempt people into sin, hurt them and even destroy them.

And look where this demon is. He is in a man, in the synagogue. He had made his way into the place of worship.

And notice what he says to Jesus. “Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.”

  1. He knows Jesus.
  2. He recognizes Him immediately.
  3. He fears Him.
  4. He acknowledges Jesus’ power and authority over him.
  5. He believes Jesus is the Holy one of God.

So, here is a demon, and he believes in God. Does that make him saved? Absolutely not.

Remember, belief and trust are two different things.

This demon trusts in satan. He follows him, not God, not Jesus.

And what about us? We may believe there is a God, we may believe He exists, but who are we trusting in?

Far too often, we are trusting in ourselves.

I want to.

I can.

I will.

But there will come a day, when you will be stuck in a position where you can’t do it. You can’t get yourself out of that situation. You can’t do it alone. You can’t save yourself.

And you’ll call out for help.

May it be Jesus that you cry out to. The One that has the power and authority to save. The One who loves you so much He died for you. The One who is beckoning your heart now.

Don’t just believe, trust in Him. Have faith in Jesus Christ. Choose to follow Him.

He wants to.

He can.

He will.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Ephesians 2:8-9
