When Words Aren’t Enough

That’s exactly where I was as I saw my friend struggling. I held my phone in my hands, wanting to send a text, but words failed me. What could I possibly say to help her? Was there anything I could share that would give her hope? How could I encourage her when life wasn’t going the way she had expected?

This is how Paul felt about the believers in Thessalonica. He had started this church during his second missionary journey, but due to the persecution aimed at them, they had to flee. Paul sent Timothy back to the church to see how they were doing, and Timothy came back with a good report about them. They were being faithful even in the midst of persecution. And because Paul had to leave so abruptly, there were still unanswered questions.

Paul knew he needed to write a letter to the Thessalonians to encourage them and help answer the questions on their minds. His message to them is filled with hope, faith, and love. He wanted them to stand firm in their faith, be confident in the truth of the resurrection, and to know what happens when a believer dies. He wanted to encourage them to live a life that was holy and to always be ready for the return of Christ. This is why he wrote the book of 1 Thessalonians. It was needed for them during that day, but perhaps it’s just as needed today.

Paul, faced with the same dilemma, gives us this beautiful letter that will strengthen our own faith and knowledge in the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
