As we walk through Grandfather’s Mansion, we come to a room where the floors feel slanted, and we can’t stand or walk straight.
We try to sit on the bench, and we slide to the left. We try to lie on the bed, and we can hardly get up.
And along one wall is a series of mirrors.
But what we see in them only makes us laugh.
One makes you tall and skinny, and another makes you short and dumpy.
They’re a poor reflection of who we truly are.
1 Timothy 1:15
“This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.”
Paul had once been looking at himself through distorted mirrors.
He saw himself through the eyes of the world and through his own understanding of the law. He believed he was justified in his actions.
But it was an encounter with Christ that allowed him to see his true reflection.
Because it’s only when we see the truth of who Jesus is that we begin to see the truth of who we are.
When Paul met Christ, he encountered His holiness. As he came to understand the truth about the very One he had vehemently denied and the gospel he had tried to destroy, he saw himself clearly for the first time.
Paul knew he was a sinner.
And he counted himself the worst.
But don’t miss this.
Paul didn’t say, “Oh, poor me.”
He recognized his sin, but he also recognized what Christ had done for him.
Jesus had died for him.
For me.
For you.
And because of it, we owe our lives to Him.
He paid a debt we owed but could never pay ourselves.
Through His death and resurrection, He made a way for us to be forgiven, rescued from the eternal separation from God that our sin deserves, and given everlasting life through faith in Him.
Like Paul, we must first see our true reflection.
And that comes through the truth of God’s Word.
Not the distorted reflection the world offers. Not the image we’ve created of ourselves. But the truth of who we are before a holy God.
Sinners in desperate need of a Savior.
And the beautiful truth is that Jesus came into this world for that very reason.
To save sinners.
Recognize your sin. Confess it to our holy God. Repent of it. And surrender your life to the One who is Worthy, True, and Righteous.
The only true King, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
