The World is Watching

That feeling when you’re with your friend and they are getting in trouble by their parent right in front of you.

You remember? Ugh, that was the worst. You were embarrassed to witness what was happening. Honestly, you couldn’t believe they acted the way they did in front of their parent. Even you knew better than that. They weren’t even your parents!

After the rebuking, you weren’t even sure how to talk to your friend. It was really just a horrible time.

Balaam, a sorcerer, is used by God to deliver a message to King Balak. Balaam was not a man after God’s heart. He was not a faithful servant like Moses or Aaron. But Balaam was willing to share the message no matter if it cost him what Balak was offering.

In Numbers 23 and 24, we see Balak pleading for Balaam to curse the Israelites, but instead, Balaam blesses them. Balak is furious.

“And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all. But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do?” (Numbers 23:25)

Every time Balak took the sorcerer to a new place, he thought he could get him away from the Lord’s guidance. But he didn’t realize that God is ever present. He sees all and knows all. And He is in control of all.

Even Balaam, a man that worshipped false gods and practiced divination, knew that God was more powerful than anything he had ever witnessed. God wasn’t even his father and he knew not to cross the Lord. Apparently, even better than the Israelites. How many times had the Lord rescued them and provided for them but they defied Him, worshipped false gods and complained to Moses about Him? But here we have this pagan, a heathen really, and even he recognizes God’s authority and does exactly what He says.

That should be a huge eye opener for us as Christians. Far too often, we see people who aren’t even saved doing the right thing, while Christians are living in sin. God isn’t even their Father but they know what’s the right thing to do. And here we are, like the bratty friend, getting in trouble, because we disobeyed.

How embarrassing.

We should be the example for others! We should lead them to the Lord, not away. It should be God’s words on our lips. He has commanded us to share the gospel to the world and yet we are using our lips for slander, gossip and complaining.

If even a man like Balaam can be used by God and he obeys, how much more should we, His own children?

The world is watching.
