Two spots.

That’s all we had. Out of the many students that had applied, only two would be awarded the internship. This was the opportunity of a lifetime. They would witness the work of physicians first-hand. They would see with their own eyes how to build relationships, heal, and treat. They would spend hours walking, listening, watching every conversation, good or bad, and they would learn. Nothing could compare to this opportunity.

Only two could be chosen. And how would we choose? Many of these students had incredible stories of coming from rough or terrible situations and through hard work and dedication had set themselves on a course for success. Others had naturally excelled in science and many other classes and had always known this was what they were meant to do.

It was a hard decision, but in the end, we knew, even though there were so many that were deserving, we had to simply choose. They still had the power to say no, they could walk away at any time. But why would they want to? Only a fool would trade in this opportunity.

Luke 6:12-16

“And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.”

Notice in verse 13 how it says “he called into his disciples and of them he chose”. As I’ve read and studied before, I knew crowds followed Jesus, but I always associate “disciples” with these 12 men. However, the scripture states that there were many that were with Jesus, learning about God and how to follow Him.

But out of those many, He chose 12 men. This was the opportunity of a lifetime. They would witness the work of the great physician first-hand. They would see with their own eyes how to build relationships, heal, and treat the needs of people. They would spend hours walking, listening, watching every conversation, good or bad, and they would learn. Nothing could compare to this opportunity.

These were 12 ordinary guys though. Nothing about them displayed greatness or that they deserved this honor. But God knew their hearts. He saw their faith, their desire to learn, and He chose to use them to turn the world upside-down.

Even Judas Iscariot.

God has a plan. We already know how it ends. He is victorious over the enemy and reigns forevermore! But to accomplish His will in the meantime, He has chosen men and women.

Who are they?

The Whosoevers.

John 3:16-17

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

Whosoever.

God has chosen you before you were born that you should be used in His kingdom. But the choice to follow Him still remains in your hands. You can say no at any time. This is called free-will. God will not force anyone to love Him. That, my friend, would not be love. But instead, He calls us, and we must choose if we will accept that offer.

No matter your background, God can use you. No matter what sins you have committed or are in the throngs of now, God can use you. Do you feel, do you hear His calling?

Like these 12 men did, drop everything and follow Him. And He can use you to turn this world upside down.
