The Truth is Out There

Most nights, after dinner, you can find us in the recliner, winding down and watching X-Files. We never watched it in the 90s so it seemed like a good series to start.

If you’re in the house while we’re watching it, you can also find us yelling at the TV. “Just shoot him!” “Seriously? That would never happen!” “What is wrong with him?” “He has to be the worst FBI agent known to man!”

But the one thing we say every episode, “What is it going to take for you to believe, Scully?”

Time after time, she sees things with her own eyes, experiences them herself, but she justifies them based on science and practicality. She cannot bring herself to believe, no matter what she witnesses, because her mind is already made up.

The truth is out there, but she will never see it.

Jesus has traveled to Magdala by boat after healing a multitude of people in the mountains near the Sea of Galilee. News, no doubt, has traveled far about the miracles He has performed throughout His ministry. The religious leaders are not a fan. The Pharisees and Sadducees feel their very livelihood and positions being threatened. They constantly look for a way to trap Jesus in His words to accuse Him of blasphemy.

“The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.” (Matthew 16:1-4)

Jesus knew what was in their hearts. They had already witnessed many miracles. They also had the prophecies that foretold of the coming Messiah and Jesus was fulfilling them exactly as they had been told. But yet, they didn’t believe. Their mind was made up. No matter what they witnessed, it still wouldn’t convince them. In fact, Jesus here speaks specifically to His resurrection.

He says, “there shall be no sign given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah.”

Remember Jonah and the big fish? How many days did he spend in the dark belly? 3 days.

Jesus was pointing to his own death and burial and then being resurrected after 3 days. The witnesses would know that Jesus was the Messiah. The Roman guard would know that Jesus was the Messiah. The whole world would know that Jesus was the Messiah. But not these men. Their mind was made up. They would not believe.

The truth is out there, but they will never see it.

What will it take for you to believe? What must you see? Are you one to constantly ask God for a sign, but never believe it when He sends one? God has revealed Himself in numerous ways and we are without excuse.

“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19-20)

We’ve seen His glory in creation – the beautiful sunrise, the air we breathe, the very blood that pumps through our veins and the life that is formed in the mother’s womb. We’ve seen it in the butterfly that emerges from the cocoon, the stars in the sky, and the vast oceans full of life! God has displayed His greatness before us, but just like Scully and her medical background, many want to justify each detail and “science” it away, attributing it to a
anything but God.

He alone is worthy to be praised! He is the Creator of all and our righteous king who reigns forevermore! And He, in all of His power, authority and majesty, thought to make someone like you. Why? Because He loves you and desires a relationship with you. And when you believe in Him, that He is the truth, you will glorify Him!

But today, you must choose.

The truth is out there. Will you see it?
