The Root of the Problem
14799 Views

We did some clearing last year on the riverbank to open it up a little more for the view. My main job was to cut down the thorns for Shaun to weed-eat. I had a sharp pair of loppers and would cut them off as far down as I could get. But I kept thinking, if I don’t get to the root and pull that out, they will just grow back.

And they have. So, this year, we will be cutting them down once again.

Through Moses, God spoke to the Israelites about allowing the seed of sin to grow in your life. When it takes root, it’s hard to remove it.

“Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood” (Deuteronomy 29:18)

Have you ever had to deal with a thorn bush in your life? It started out as a seed, a seemingly tiny sin, planted in your heart. You knew it was wrong, yet, you liked it. And you allowed it to stay. Instead of confessing it to the Lord and turning from it, you ignored it, and it began to take root.

Soon, that sin grew and a thorn bush has taken over. It’s harder to combat now, and even your best efforts to remove it are feeble. You can chop it down, but the root is still there.

How do we remove it? Go to the source, to the root of the problem and meet God there. Let Him have control and destroy that sin. Where it leaves a hole, let Him be the one to fill it.

And when we are tempted again with the tiny seed of sin, confess it to the Lord and don’t let it take root in your life.
