The Portrait of Christ
36 Views

Paul, a man called by God to share with the world the truth of Jesus Christ, wrote to the believers in Colosse. There was confusion within the church about Jesus. False doctrine had made its way into the church, and Paul was painting them a picture of the truth about Jesus.

Colossians 1:15–20
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.”

There are ten important aspects of Christ that Paul shares in this passage.

  1. Jesus is God in the flesh (v. 15) — God made Himself visible to man through the human flesh of Jesus Christ, the Son.
  2. Christ existed before all created things (v. 15) — John 1:1 tells us that “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jesus Christ has always existed.
  3. All things were created, both seen and unseen, by Him and for Him (v. 16).
  4. He has authority over all things and holds all of creation together (v. 17).
  5. Christ is the head of the church (v. 18).
  6. He is the first to defeat death (v. 18).
  7. He is Lord over all—spiritually supreme (v. 18).
  8. He is fully God (v. 19).
  9. Christ’s death reconciled us back to God (v. 20).
  10. His blood makes peace possible between us and God (v. 20).

As Paul painted this picture, the people could clearly see Christ revealed. Before, God was invisible to them, but through Christ, He became a real image they could behold.

God is the ultimate artist. His majesty, His nature, and His supreme authority are all on display in Christ Jesus. When we see the full nature and divinity of Christ, our only response is to bow before Him as Lord.

Have you done that?

I’m not sure where you are in life, but if you read these ten things about the nature of Christ, there is no doubt of who He is and His power to save you.
