The Only Truth

“So can you be gay and be a Christian?”

This was the question that came up between my nephew and his friend. As they were debating through what they knew to be true, he reached out to me via text and asked what I thought about it.

My first reaction: 🤯

Through several messages, I relayed what we know is true from the only source of truth: the Bible. Then I spoke more directly about if this were an actual person talking to him, dealing with this issue, here’s how you can respond… in love.

Because really, that’s what’s at the heart of these tough questions.

I’ll be the first to tell you, I don’t have all the answers. But I know the One who does.

Luke 20:27-40

“Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. The second and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. Finally, the woman died too. Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?” Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” And no one dared to ask him any more questions.”

The Sadducees were a group of religious leaders who only believed in the first 5 books of the Bible called the Pentateuch. They couldn’t find any mention of resurrection in those books, so they did not believe in an actual resurrection. Often, they would spar with the Pharisees over controversial topics in scripture. They thought this question would be too much for even Jesus. But in His answer to them, Jesus gave them more than they bargained for.

He went beyond what they were asking and got to the real question, the heart of the matter.

He not only quoted Moses, the most trusted source in scripture to them, but He spoke about the issue they were really asking about. And it wasn’t marriage.

“He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

This is what they were stuck on. Death. Resurrection. They couldn’t get past it. But Jesus showed them that if they truly knew God, they would be His children and would live.

And that was it. The questions ceased.

That’s what the Word of God does. It silences. It is the final word. It’s the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and end.

This world says a lot about truth. They want to claim “that’s not my truth” when there is only one source of absolute truth – the Word of God, the Bible. Not just a portion, but the whole thing.

As questions arise, especially the tough ones, as much as we might want to shy away from them, let’s take them straight to the truth instead. We may not have all the answers, but we know the One who does.

Jesus.

And in Him, we have life!
