The Confidence to Walk Away

There was urgency, determination, and purpose in every step I took. Something was happening, and someone needed to do something. I knew exactly who to go to.

Elementary school playgrounds are full of conversations, mischief, and drama. As a kid, you always felt like you knew more than the teachers did—or at least you thought you did.

That day, something big was happening over by the track, and I was convinced someone was going to get hurt if an adult didn’t step in. So I ran to the teacher on playground duty.

Out of breath, I explained everything I had seen and overheard. She listened carefully, smiled, and simply said, “Go play. I’ll take care of it.”

And I believed her.

I didn’t have to stand there and make sure she handled it. I didn’t have to explain what punishment I thought was appropriate or tell her how I believed she should solve the problem. I trusted that, even if she didn’t do what I would have done, she would do what was right.

So I went back to playing.

Isn’t that a beautiful picture of how God invites us to come to Him?

Paul writes,

“Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.”
Colossians 4:2

Prayer is more than bringing our requests to God. It is entrusting them to Him.

Bring Him your worries.
Your fears.
Your questions.
Your joys.
Your burdens.
Your praises.

Tell Him everything that is on your heart.

Then thank Him.

Not because you already know how He will answer, but because you know the One who will answer.

That can be difficult, can’t it?

If we’re honest, many of us don’t simply bring our requests to God—we also bring our proposed solutions. We mentally hand Him several options and then wait to see which one He chooses.

But His wisdom is infinitely greater than ours.

How could my plans ever improve on the plans of the One who sees the beginning and the end? The One who knows every detail in between? The One who loves me perfectly and always acts according to His perfect will?

The moment we pray, we can rest. Not because every circumstance immediately changes, but because we have placed our burden into the hands of the One who is completely trustworthy.

That is why Paul says to pray with thanksgiving.

Before God answers…

Before circumstances improve…

Before we understand what He is doing…

We can already thank Him because we know His character.

What burden have you been carrying today?

Have you truly given it to the Lord, or are you still trying to manage the outcome yourself?

Lean into Him today. Lay your burden at His feet. Feel the weight begin to lift as you remember it was never yours to carry alone.

Pray continually.

Trust completely.

And thank Him—even before you see the answer—because your Heavenly Father always knows what is best.
