How many kids got slime kits for Christmas? I’m always fascinated with the process of making it! I used to travel from school to school and I would make “flubber” with 8th graders as we talked about science and health care.
The coolest part is adding that one ingredient that completely changes the mixture into something new. You’re just sitting there mixing and once that one thing is added, poof! It changes! How cool is that?! And… that one thing that made it change… you cannot take it out! It can never go back to the way it was before! It cannot be separated!
In the book of Mark, we read about Jesus teaching and performing miracles. This particular one points us to an incredible part of the work of Christ.
“And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.” (Mark 2: 3-12)
“We’ve never seen anything like this!” That’s what the people proclaimed. They couldn’t believe their eyes! This man came to Jesus crippled and leaped from his bed and ran out of there!
He was lame and then he could walk!
One thing happened. One thing was added to this man and he was changed completely.
Was it a long list of good deeds that he had done his whole life?
Was it a number of chants that he said allowed?
The one thing was Jesus.
This man believed Jesus could heal him. Because of his faith in Christ, he was completely changed. And it was visible! Didn’t you see how the Pharisees murmured and complained? They didn’t like it at all! And didn’t you read that last line? They were all astonished!
This is a true testament to the saving work of Jesus Christ. We are lost in our sins. But when we put our faith in Jesus, immediately we are changed into something new! And…that one thing that made the change, Jesus, you cannot take out! It can never go back to the way it was before! You cannot be separated from Jesus and His saving work! It can’t be earned, it can’t be lost. Salvation is permanent!
