Start at the Beginning

Tears streaming down his face, my nephew came hobbling over to me. Something big must have happened.

His little mouth was going 100 miles an hour trying to tell me what happened, but it was hard to understand. He was all over the place and crying too hard.

I wasn’t getting a clear picture of the story. I knew some of what had happened but couldn’t tell who did what and why.

I tried to calm and comfort him and rubbed his hair away from his face.

“It’s okay. Cookie’s here.” (That’s me by the way) “But you’ve got to slow down. Just start from the beginning and tell me all about it.”

John 1:1
“In the beginning…”

John had a purpose for writing this book. His goal – to show who Jesus is to all people. Perhaps when he sat down to write this book, he struggled with how to get started. Much like we do when we tell a story.

There are many details, lots of great points and events, but the best way to get the full picture of who Jesus is, is to start at the beginning.

Look at Genesis 1:1.

“In the beginning…”

Moses wrote with a goal to show the big picture about who God is. He begins this first book of the Bible in the same way.

Both are referring to the same point in history. Not just the beginning of their own story, but the actual beginning of time.

God was there at the beginning of creation because He was the Creator. So that must mean in John’s book, that if his goal is to point to who Jesus is, that his next words will be about Jesus.

We all have a story to tell. A story of redemption heartache, trials, endurance, overcoming, and surrender. We know we should share it to show others the power of Christ in our lives, but getting started can be one of the hardest, if not THE hardest thing. So, do what Moses and John did.

Just start at the beginning.

Tell your story. Tell how Jesus changed you. Tell of His love.
