Seek Counsel

I just love it when someone asks for your advice and then does not take it.

Enter sarcasm.

I have no doubt you’ve been in this very situation. A friend or loved one rushes to you with their predicament and needs your input. They want sound advice and they’ve come to you.

But apparently, whatever you shared with them, is NOT what they were hoping to hear.

So, instead, they venture out, perhaps to find someone that will align more with what they think is the best option, or just do whatever it is they want to do.

And then they regret it.

It’s not that you want to say “I told you so.” But if they had listened, it could have been prevented.

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.”

Luke 6:46-49

As we finish up chapter 6 this morning, we read this warning from Jesus. He even gives a great visual as an example.

A house wouldn’t last long against any of the harsh conditions of this world if it were built solely on the earth. There would be nothing to truly grasp onto. And as the storms hit, the house would fall. But in contrast, the house that was built on a solid foundation, the rock, it would withstand.

If we ask God for guidance but we choose what we want rather than what He says, our “house” will fall. He alone is our rock. He is what we should build our life upon. All of our decisions should be made by seeking His counsel and being wise enough to follow Him when He gives us the answer.

Seek Christ. Go to Him in prayer and read His word. Our decisions should always line up with His direction in scripture. If it says it’s wrong in the Bible, it’s still wrong today. Talk to your pastor or reach out to people you believe are well studied in scripture and would give godly advice. Need help finding a local church? I’d be glad to help you!
