Restored Relationships

“Would you tell Danae that I would like my pen back?”

“Well, would you tell Yalanda this isn’t even her pen?”

The middle man. The go-between. The intermediator. The messenger. The intercessor.

This was a vital person when two girls would fight. I’m sure boys did, too, but I’ll just speak from experience. We used this a lot. Someone said or did something, and the relationship had been altered. And the only way we could get a message to the other person was through this third party.

It got old. Real quick.

It was silly! But something had to be done to restore that relationship and allow us to talk to one another once again.

Do you know how hard it is to admit you’re wrong? But it had to be done. You had to confess. Only then could forgiveness occur and healing begin to take place.

And once again, with that relationship restored, we were best friends.

Jesus was calling His disciples to Himself one by one. The latest was Nathaniel, whom Phillip had found sitting under a fig tree. When Phillip told him about finding the Messiah and that He was from Nazareth, Nathaniel doubted anything good could come from such a place.

Jesus tells Nathaniel that He saw him sitting under a fig tree and that was enough for Nathaniel to believe.

John 1:50-51
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”

Jesus spoke these words to these new disciples. They couldn’t imagine what that meant yet, but Jesus was preparing their hearts for what was to come.

Jesus would restore their relationship with God. They would no longer need a priest to offer sacrifices on their behalf. Jesus, the Son of Man, became the intercessor for us. Because of His sacrifice for us, the relationship between man and God could be restored.

And the same for us today.

When we recognize our sin, confess it to the Lord, and repent, we put our faith in Christ to save us. That relationship is restored. Jesus made a way for us.

We can speak to God directly when we pray. We can be in His presence. No longer is there a veil between us, all because of Jesus.
