Powerful Words

“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.” – Charles Spurgeon

Powerful words.

Do you ever read something and just sit in awe of the statement? It truly makes you stop in your tracks. Rolling it over in your mind, contemplating the truth, the severity, and the reality of it.

Maybe there is a quote from someone that has stuck with you for years. Those powerful words forever etched in your mind, like those I shared above from Charles Spurgeon.

But as I read our passage this morning from Matthew, it struck me, just how powerful God’s word is.

“Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” (Matthew 24:32-35)

Jesus finishes His warning of His second coming and the end times. In His conclusion, He makes an incredible statement in verse 35.

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

The earth. The very place we live. The land, the sea, the people, the buildings, the mountains, the rivers, the animals, every single thing will be gone. And not just the earth, but the heavens, too! It’s so enormous of a thought that I can’t even fathom it!

But even when everything we’ve ever known will be gone, there will be one thing remaining… the Word of God.

Those must truly be powerful words.

The very words that were used to speak the earth into existence will be the ones that are used to destroy it. The words that brought life into man will be used to take it away in judgment. The words that offered salvation to all will come as eternal punishment for those that did not accept His gift. And the very Word of God that was in the beginning (John 1:1) will be in the end.

Powerful words.

And we have the opportunity to hold it in our hands and allow it to speak life, hope and freedom into our lives every day. We have the privilege to learn these powerful words and share them with others, knowing what they’ve done for us and how they can help and heal another. But do we?

Your words are powerful too, molding and shaping your children, your friendships and relationships. Are you using your powerful words to build up one another or do we tear each other down? Are we sharing the most powerful story ever told, the good news of Jesus Christ, or are we afraid of what someone might think or that we aren’t going to say the right words?

God’s word is too powerful for you to mess it up. It does not go out void. If you share His word as He intended, that’s all that matters. The Holy Spirit will do the work.

Powerful words that offer hope today for all. Will you share it?
