Perfect Timing

Have you ever had a time in your own life when you just couldn’t understand why things weren’t going the way you thought they should? Maybe there was a situation you were praying about, but the more you prayed the more it seemed as though nothing was happening. Maybe you were going through some tough stuff and it seemed as though God was nowhere to be found. You were crying for rescue, but for some reason you continued to remain in your situation. Maybe helplessness even began to set in. But just when the time was right . . .

It seems like every day I find myself being amazing at the timing of God. He doesn’t show up early, and He’s never late. There’s a song a friend of mine from church sings that rings so true: “He’s an on time God, yes He is. He may not come when you want Him, but He’ll be there right on time.” There’s some great theology in that simple song.
David had his own struggles with God’s timing throughout His life. Just imagine being anointed as the king of a nation yet having to wait years to exercise that reign because your predecessor is still sitting on the throne! David had to trust God while Saul tried to cling to the throne that was rightfully his. It was all about timing.
There are probably as many explanations for why David had to wait as there are flavors of ice cream. I tend to believe that God was using that time of waiting to prepare David for the throne. God wanted David to be a “man after His own heart,” and not another Saul, who was the first King of Israel but went “off the rails” and tried to kill David. In order for that to be the case, David had to wait. And the wait was worth it.
If I always got everything I pray for when I prayed for it, I can honestly say my life wouldn’t look anything like it does today. I don’t think I’d have any character or integrity, either. The waiting tends to teach you those things.
There are a few things in my life that I’ve wanted to do sooner yet only found myself doing them at much later times. Many times I’ve chalked it up to my own fear or inabilities. However, I just believe that most of it stems from God’s timing at just the precise time of His own choosing. He knows what He’s doing – all the time, every time.
So today, don’t let yourself get frustrated or disheartened. God is still faithfully in control, and His promises will still be kept.

And friend, believe me – it will all be worth it when they are.
