Knowledge is empty.
Wait . . . that’s not the way that slogan goes. I thought it was “Knowledge Is Power”?
But, is it?
Knowledge alone is empty. It’s just information. To be powerful, it must do something, right?
For knowledge to have power, it has to lead to change.
This is exactly what Paul was trying to tell the believers at Colosse.
Gnosticism had infiltrated the church. What is that? Well, gnostics value the accumulation of knowledge. Knowledge is good, but as Paul reminded the believers, it is worthless if it is not applied.
“because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth;” – Colossians 1:5-7
And . . . that’s the kicker here. The gospel came to them, they heard the truth, AND something happened. What?
It brought forth fruit.
It changed their lives.
Knowing that Jesus died, was buried, and rose from the grave was not enough. They had to believe in it. And when they did, their lives were transformed.
Their lives were to be lived out for Christ because of what they knew.
How many times have you heard the gospel?
You may know the truth, but has it changed you?
Knowledge is empty unless it leads to change.
Hear the gospel:
We are all sinners before a Holy God.
He made a way for us to be forgiven, but it required a perfect, sinless sacrifice of blood.
Jesus paid the price for our sins on the cross as He was crucified.
Jesus died, and His body was buried in a tomb for 3 days.
On the third day, Christ rose from the dead, defeating death and sin.
He offers forgiveness and salvation to all who will believe in Him and trust in Him as their Lord.
Believe the gospel:
Christ loves you. He desires for you to be reconciled to God. He wants a relationship with you. No matter who you are or what you’ve done, salvation is offered to you. Christ has the power to forgive any sin in your life and make you new.
Follow Him:
Pray for the Lord to save you.
Tell Him you believe and trust in Him. Ask Him to forgive you and change you. Trust in Him as your Lord and Savior. And seek His truth from Scripture. Learn what following Christ looks like as you study your Bible. And live it out. Don’t just know what a Christian is—be one!
