Just Ordinary People

We stood out on the field, waiting to hear our name called. It was always really a stressful and grueling time. When would I get picked?

When it came to kickball or softball, you wanted two people first – Johnny and Aaron. These two were heavy hitters. They could knock that ball clear to the fences, so they were key to winning. Then you needed someone with a good arm. Kayla was the top pick. She was just an all-around top athlete. Then you needed some people who were coordinated enough to run and catch (because that’s harder than you think). And, of course, you needed speed.

High fives were slapped as each person was chosen, and then the extras remained. Those that weren’t spectacular athletes, but they did okay. They were great people, great friends, but not so great at sports. They filled the gaps. And even though you knew it was a game and they picked people to win, it was the worst feeling to be standing there and not chosen first. Just once, it would have been awesome had this group been the first to get picked.

And here, in Matthew 26, we see Jesus do just that.

“Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.” (Matthew 26:17-19)

Mark records it this way:
“And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.” (Mark 14:13-15)

So out of all the places He could have chosen to have His last meal, the Passover meal, Jesus chose this house. Out of all the men He could have picked out to say, “I’m coming to your house”, Jesus chose this ordinary guy, who was obviously a hard worker, carrying a pitcher of water. He wasn’t some rich man with a lavish home and a huge amount of the best foods and drinks, he was just an ordinary guy.

Much like the men and women He chose to follow Him. Much like you and me.

Who does Jesus choose? Do you have to have a great deal of money? Do you have to have two or three degrees? Is it someone that can give Him a great deal back because they own many properties and business? Is it someone who’s the most popular among the people?

It’s just ordinary people.

God can use anybody to accomplish His will. He has gifted you in a great way, but it’s up to you to find out how to use that gift for God’s glory. When He calls, will you listen and accept His offer? Will you obey and follow Him? Anywhere? Will you trust in Him that even though you know you are nothing. Do you believe He will equip you to do that work that is before you?

“So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.” (Matthew 20:16)

God can do extraordinary things with ordinary people. Will you say yes?
