John’s Unmistakable Sign
180 Views

The King’s men searched the kingdom, not leaving any door unopened in their quest to find the one.

The one who had captured the heart of the prince. The one who would become royalty. The one who could wear the shoe.

Most of us know the story of Cinderella, the young maiden forced to be a slave in her own home by her evil stepmother and stepsisters. But thanks to her fairy godmother, she was made ready for the ball and stole the prince’s heart. But, at the stroke of midnight, the magic of the fairy godmother would wear off, and everything would return to its original state: no more fancy carriage, fine horsemen, or dazzling dress. So, when Cinderella heard the clock’s chimes, she raced away, leaving only one thing – her glass slipper.

The prince would try that shoe on every foot in the land to reunite with the woman he fell in love with. That shoe would prove who she was.

John the Baptist knew his mission. He was to preach to the people a message of repentance. He was to prepare the way for the Messiah.

But who was the Messiah?

John didn’t know. But he did know there would be a clear sign revealing the One God had sent.

John 1:32-34

“And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.”

Can you imagine what that would have looked like? I’m sure John had spent days upon days wondering what that would look like and who the Messiah would be. But the moment it happened, it was unmistakable.

Descending from heaven like a dove, bringing with Him perfect peace.

This was Him. This was the Messiah. This was the Son of God.

John knew Him and immediately made Him known.

Do you?

Do you know Jesus? Not just a knowledge of Him, but an understanding of who He really is?

He is God. He came to save us from our sins. He died on the cross to pay our debt of sin, was buried, and three days later, He arose, conquering death and Hell. He has all authority in heaven and earth. He has the power to heal, change, clean, destroy, and forgive.

Have you fallen before the King? Have you come to the place where you hear Him calling to you, showing you just how wretched your sin is and your need for forgiveness? Speak. Call out to Jesus and tell Him what’s on your heart. Ask Him to forgive you. Ask Him to save you. And surrender your will to His.

And then, just like John, when we know Him, we have a mission – to make Him known.

People need Jesus. Refrain from assuming anything about what people know or understand these days. Don’t assume they have a relationship with Jesus. Tell them. Tell them about what Jesus has done in your life. The miracle He did when He saved you.

Tell them.
