On a recent trip to the Oregon coast, we visited and photographed several of the historic lighthouses that stand watch along the rugged shoreline. As I admired each one, I couldn’t help but think that lighthouses beautifully illustrate what Jesus does in the lives of those who trust Him.
Lighthouses send their light across great distances, cutting through darkness and fog. In the same way, Jesus offers His light to everyone who is willing to receive it.
Each lighthouse we visited was unique. Some were perched high atop rocky headlands overlooking the Pacific Ocean, while others stood near quiet harbors. Though their designs and locations differed, they all shared the same mission—to shine their light across the water, warning mariners of hidden dangers and guiding them safely into harbor.
Most lighthouses were intentionally built where the coastline was most dangerous, providing hope exactly where it was needed most. Just as a lighthouse pierces through darkness and dense fog, Christ cuts through the spiritual darkness of this world with the light of truth.
“I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” — John 8:12
Lighthouses are anchored deep into solid, immovable rock. Their foundations reach deep into the earth to support the tremendous height and weight of each tower. For decades—even centuries—they have endured crashing waves, fierce storms, hurricane-force winds, and relentless tides.
Jesus is our unshakable foundation. He stood firm and unwavering in the face of rejection, suffering, and even death on the cross to pay the price for our salvation. He remains our everlasting Rock, providing strength and stability through every storm of life.
Lighthouses Are Also Faithful
Even with today’s sophisticated GPS technology, ship captains still rely on lighthouses. Their lights continue to shine faithfully, night after night, offering guidance when visibility is poor and danger is near. Years ago, dedicated lighthouse keepers carefully tended the lamps. Today, most lights operate automatically, yet they continue their faithful work without fail.
Jesus is faithful in the same way—but even more perfectly. His light never grows dim, never turns off, and never fails. He continually guides us away from the hidden dangers of sin and toward the safe harbor of eternal life.
It is no wonder Jesus is so often compared to a lighthouse. What a powerful picture of His love, guidance, truth, and protection. Just as a lighthouse stands firm through every storm, shining its light for all who need it, Christ remains constant through every season of our lives.
No matter how dark the night, how fierce the storm, or how thick the fog, His light is always there—steady, reliable, and full of hope.
May we keep our eyes fixed on the Light that never fails.

Turn Toward the Safe Harbor
Turn your life toward the only safe harbor. It’s simple.
If you are ready to place your faith in Him, you can pray a simple prayer like this:
“Dear God, I realize I am a sinner and that my sin separates me from You. Thank You for sending Jesus to die for me and rise again. Right now, I put my trust in Him to be my Lord and Savior. Please forgive me, and help me live for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
