Is It Worth It?

Our kids were preparing to build a house. Since they’ve never experienced this joy, we are helping them walk through the process. There have been many sit-down talks to discuss plans, bids for jobs, and, of course, the cost.

“That’s going to cost how much?!”

Things are certainly more expensive than we think or imagine. What we thought might be about $8,000 came back to be $14,000. Sure, there was a little shock and worry, and the question that kept being raised was, “Is it worth it?”

You have to get to a point where you’ve counted the cost and determined the outcome is far better.

In the end, they will have a beautiful home, one they’ve dreamed about for so long, and the moment they enter the doors, they’ll know it was all worth it.

**1 Thessalonians 2:14–15**

*“For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans, who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God and are contrary to all men.”*

Paul, a missionary for Christ, wrote to the believers in Thessalonica. Much of his letter was to encourage them and help them have a better understanding of what a life following Christ looks like, but also what life after death means for a believer.

Paul and his companions had started this church during his second missionary journey. They had learned a great deal from Paul, believed in Christ, and chosen to follow Him. But following Christ did not mean they would be protected from suffering. Persecution came, and they experienced firsthand the cost of following Jesus.

Paul reminded them that Jesus Himself suffered persecution and was killed. Were they still so willing to follow Him? Was it worth it?

They had to get to a point where they counted the cost and determined the outcome is far better.

We are all faced with that same question and decision as we count the cost of following Christ.

But remember what Jesus said in John 16:33:

*“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”*

There will be trials and persecution here. But…this is not our eternal home. Eternity awaits. With Christ, we spend eternity in Heaven with God. Apart from Christ, we spend eternity separated from Him and all things good, in Hell.

Is following Jesus worth it?

A resounding YES!!!
