I Don’t Understand, But I Trust Him

*β€œFor as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.”* β€” John 20:9–10

THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND.

From the beginning, there was much the disciples did not understand.

β€œFollow Me,” Jesus said.

Where are we going? What are we going to do?

Jesus didn’t provide a playbook or an itinerary.

For sure, their journey was wild. Never quite understanding, but constantly amazed. There was something about Jesus. A little scary, yes, but nonetheless amazing.

And now, their best friend, teacher, and mentor had been killed. Unjustly, by all accounts.

And still, again, they did not understand.

WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

Truth be told, there is much we do not understand.

Why do the best people seem to suffer the most? The people we would think of as least deserving sometimes suffer the harshest fate.

Cancer. Alzheimer’s. The death of a child.

My wife. Holly Susan.

Sweet. Kind. A servant. Loves God big. Loves others deeply. Always an encourager. Full of joy. Committed her life to telling God stories. Faithful to the end.

Why her?

I don’t understand, and I doubt I ever will.

AND YET, I TRUST HIM.

Why did the disciples follow Jesus when they didn’t understand?

Why do we continue to trust Him even when we don’t understand?

In short, **FAITH.**

Not faith in the plan. If I knew the plan, I’m certain I would not trust it.

Faith in the Person.

No matter the plan, I can trust the Man.

Jesus can be trusted.

I can trust His promises, and to this promise I cling:

β€œWe know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”* β€” Romans 8:28

He has a plan.

He has a plan for Holly.

I don’t understand, but I trust Him.
