Hear His Voice

I’ve sat at tables with people that were far more distinguished, impressive, and intelligent than I. Just their presence is humbling. Even if I spoke, what would I say? Me? What could I possibly offer?

I might offer up some little remark about something I think would sound impressive, but truthfully, the conversation doesn’t need my input in any way.

Have you been there?

Peter, James and John were.

“And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power. And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves: and he was transfigured before them. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them. And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter answered and said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid. And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves. And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.” (Mark 9:1-10)

Wow! Can you imagine to have been invited to that moment? What would you have said?! What could you have done? These men saw Jesus in His full glory and splendor! They saw His holiness and power that was given by God Himself!

And poor Peter. He thinks he must say something. He offers up what he thinks will be a noble gesture. But truthfully, this isn’t about what he can offer; it’s about what Jesus will offer.

God’s voice comes from the clouds and points all of the attention on Jesus. “This is my beloved Son, hear him.” No wonder the disciples were afraid and didn’t know what to do or say! They had just seen two men that were long dead and now they see their friend Jesus transformed into something so glorious and bright they can’t hardly explain it!

Even today, sometimes, it is better to watch and listen for God’s voice. You come to the Lord in prayer and feel you have to have the perfect words, you have to say things that will be meaningful and profound, but God wants your heart.

Listen.

Hear His voice.

Let it be the focus of your prayers. Let God’s word be in your heart and on your mind. Be still and know that He is God. He is righteous and holy! He is the creator of all and nothing catches Him by surprise. He has much to say to us if we will just listen.
