The challenge had been made. They had one week to go out and complete their task. They had studied, they had learned exactly what to do. Now, they had to do it.

The next week, our room was a bustle of energy and noise. Girls were talking over one another, laughter billowed out into the hallway, and the excitement in their voices could be heard downstairs.

They couldn’t wait to share with me how their week had been.

“And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.” (Mark 6:30-31)

Can’t you just picture it? The disciples returning from this journey Jesus had sent them on to teach and work miracles. They had so much to share! Stories of people and their issues, diseases, misfortunes, and the impact these disciples had on them. They were amazed at themselves and what they were able to do. And they couldn’t wait to share it all with the one who had sent them.

And what was Jesus’ response? He said, come and rest. Always the shepherd watching over His flock, caring for every need.

I love this moment in scripture. It’s such a beautiful picture of not just the relationship between a teacher and his student, but the companionship, the impact, the evidence of what it means to pour life and experience into another person. These men weren’t just acquaintances, meeting a few times here and there, they were family. They lived life together, learning and feeling together. They were more than just friends. They were family.

And we are all meant to partake in this type of relational community. We have the privilege of being a part of the local church, serving with one another, learning and studying together. And just as these disciples were sent out, we too have been given such a commission to go and reach the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Not alone, but with other believers.

I invite you to join in. To have that same fellowship with other believers as these men had. To learn and experience life with one another and then as you go and share the gospel, you’ll be so excited to come back and share about your experience.

No matter where you are, you can get connected. It’s time. I promise you, there’s nothing like it!
