Fulfillment in the Word

What if I told you I was going to try a new diet? With this one, I’ll eat just one day a week. Not too much, though. That should be able to tide me over.

Sounds crazy right?

Okay, well, I’ll add in a little snack that night.

Still not enough?

Let’s see. I could probably add in just one little piece of fruit here or there throughout the week.

This diet would have me weak, vulnerable to issues and sickness, and I would struggle mentally and emotionally. There is no way I could live off of this diet.

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

They are about to enter the promised land and Moses is going over the commandments from God once again to serve as a reminder to the people on how to follow God.

In this passage of scripture, Moses points out that the Word of God had to be part of their daily life, not just one day a week. And it was vital for the parents to teach it to their children. Just like the food they would eat, the word of God had to be a part of everyday living. It was vital for survival.

Has that changed? Was that only a fad like other diets?

Absolutely not.

If you can’t live on a diet that only consumes a little food one day a week, what makes you think your spiritual diet should be any different? Without studying God’s word, without the encouragement, guidance and wisdom from scripture, we would be weak, vulnerable to issues and sickness, and struggle mentally and emotionally. There is no way we can live off of such little contact with the Lord.

“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)

Aren’t you hungry? Don’t you long for something to fill you? Why do we automatically turn to this world for fulfillment when our soul longs for the sweetness of God’s word? His truth brings peace and satisfies our deepest thirsts and hunger.

I encourage you to put down your distractions and pick up the Word of God today. Read it, observe what’s taking place, think about how it applies to your life and then pray about what you have read. Maybe the scripture will point out something that needs to change in your life. Or perhaps it gives you something to praise God for! Spend time in His word and let your soul come awake!
