From Darkness to Light

When the big light on the power pole came on outside, we knew it was time to go in. As kids, we played outside every day. The worst was if you were playing and then had the thought to run in and grab something only to come back out and it be too dark to keep playing.

I remember that exact thing happening. My brother and I were doing something that required a little digging. We were too small to use the shovel, and we didn’t have a trowel, so I had the bright idea we’d just use one of the big spoons from the kitchen drawer.

I ran inside, looked for one that had a strong handle on it, and ran to go back outside. But the moment I opened the door, it was as if hours had passed and it was dark out. We had to come back in and end our adventure. I wanted to ask for just a little more daylight, but how do you ask that of God?

They are in the middle of the battle. The Israelites continue to work to defeat the enemy kings and their armies. But Joshua notices it’s starting to get dark. As he plots out strategies in his mind, he moves forward with a request to God.

“Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.” (Joshua 10:12-14)

Joshua, with complete and unwavering faith, makes his request known to the Lord that He stop the sun in order to give them more light to finish the battle.

First of all, wow! As we’ve read from Genesis to Joshua, we have seen God do some incredible miracles, and this one is just as amazing!

Are you fighting a battle? Maybe you feel like the darkness is closing in and you need more light to continue. Jesus Christ said He is the light of the world. Reach out to Him to in faith that He would give you what you need to continue!
