Don’t Miss Out on Jesus

“Let’s go to work.”

That little line out of the song Cha-Cha Slide has been in my mind all morning. Our dog, Duke, loves to catch this rubber frisbee. It’s soft enough for us to throw in the house, or roll for that matter.

We tease that it’s his job and he shows up every morning with that red frisbee ready to go to work. Over and over we throw this thing, and finally, we say, “Okay, break time. Take some time to rest.”

Normally, I open my Bible around 6:30 am. This is about the time Shaun is heading out the door to work, and it’s a quiet time where I can focus on the Word and what the Lord wants to show me that morning.

But this morning, I’ve got that little song in my head and I’m thinking about everything that needs to be done.

I’ve got clothes in the dryer that need to be folded. I need to make the bed, walk the dogs… the list continues.

With just a little coffee in my system, I’m ready to go.

But then I stopped.

This is my time with the Lord. I don’t want to miss it.

Those things can wait.

I open my Bible and here is the passage for this morning.

Luke 10:38-42

“Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus‘ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.”

Martha and Mary. Two women who were both serving Christ. Martha was the perfect hostess. Hospitality was of great importance to this culture. It would be shameful if one of her guests wasn’t served, ran out of something to drink, didn’t have food, or was ignored. Mary usually helped her sister to make sure all was taken care of, but while Martha was busy, she saw her sister resting.

If you were to put yourself in this story, who would you be? Mary? Or Martha?

I’ll be honest.

I’m Martha. I can see it plain as day. In fact, I’m angry and frustrated with Martha right now.

“Fill the glasses. Where are the grapes and olives? Slice the bread. Pour the olive oil. Add the spices. Oh, we have so much work to do! Look at all these people. We will never get all this done. Where is Mary?”

Gasp!

“I can’t believe she’s sitting down! How dare she! This isn’t fair! She’s resting while I’m doing all the work.”

Is this you?

But look how Jesus answers.

“And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

One thing is needful.

There is something of greater importance than everything else you could be doing.

Me.

Jesus tells Martha that Mary has chosen the good part. She has chosen that which is best, which is being with Jesus.

Listening.

Learning.

Resting in Him.

I know I needed this reminder today. I’m guilty of equating busyness with success or worth.

And that’s just not true.

Stop.

Listen.

Learn.

Rest.

Jesus wants you, not all this stuff you can do, but you. Don’t be so busy doing His work that you miss out on the best thing, Him.
