Do You See?

Staring at the presentation, they began shouting out guesses. A room full of 8th grade students were learning about careers in the medical field.

Ophthalmologist.

They were stumped. So, I gave them a hint.

“Can you see that word up there? Sometimes it’s hard to see this one.”

They nodded their heads, but the look on their faces revealed just how clueless they were.

I said it again.

“Can you see that word?” with the emphasis on “see”, drawing it out.

A few puzzled looks.

I laughed and said, “maybe you have something wrong with your eyes like cataracts, glaucoma or something and you need to go see an eye specialist.”

They just stared blankly.

But one student said, “oh! An eye doctor! I see what you were saying now!”

Understanding flooded the room.

“No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.”

Luke 11:33-36

All clear?

If you’re like me, you might have read and re-read this passage a few times already. So, let me give you a little help in understanding the meaning of Jesus’ words.

The light is Christ. I think that one’s easy to figure out. And darkness is evil. But what about the eye? What does that mean?

It represents understanding. Especially with spiritual matters.

When we have Christ, we show Him to the world, not hide Him away. But His light isn’t just to shine for others, but for us. With His light, we are able to see or understand spiritual things that we didn’t before. We see Him at work in everyday situations. We see evidence of Him at work because of the changes within us and in those around us. But if we shift our focus away from Him and to things of this world, we move away from the light into darkness.

It’s like trying to navigate your way through a dimly lit room with sunglasses on. You stumble and fall at every turn and obstacle that comes your way.

Let’s put our focus on Christ and let His light shine within us and around us, guiding us throughout our day. His light will then shine through us to help those around us see Him more clearly.

Do you see?
