Do You Believe?

Mustard or Mayo? Ocean or mountains? Ice cream or sno-cones? Steak or chicken?

We played this little game before class yesterday and my students realized how much they can relate to one another because of their choices and likes.

On a daily basis, we do something similar. We find ways to relate to one another by asking questions like, “Where are you from? Who do you know at …? What do you do?”

When we find some common ground, it gives us a place to begin. It opens a door for us to begin building a friendship and share more about ourselves with this person.

Luke finds that same common ground early on in his book. One of the things many of us can relate to Luke about is that he was a gentile. This means, he was not a Jew. It opens the door for us to see that the message of Jesus is not just for the Jews, but for everyone! In fact, that’s who this book was intended for, the gentiles.

Luke was also a physician and knew he needed to be thorough in his research and information he delivered through this book.

“Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.” (Luke 1:1-4)

What was Luke saying here? He was declaring that although he wasn’t an eyewitness to these things, he had a clear understanding of the events due to his research and believed them so much that he felt compelled to share them.
