Children Need Guidance

My niece is a pretty spectacular girl. If you don’t know her, you are missing out! Every day is a new adventure with her. Of course, there are usually unicorns, rainbows, and pink, glittery princesses involved, but she is a one-of-a-kind girl. If she had her way, she would have ice-cream for breakfast with jelly beans, M&Ms, sprinkles and gum balls (seriously, she eats it like that). She would wear anything she chose, which would probably mean it doesn’t match or fit. She would skip the parts of school she doesn’t like, and choose recess and music, because she loves to sing. There would be no homework, no hair brushes, no toothbrushes, and of course nothing boring. She would stay up all night and sleep in until noon. She would spend every dime she had on LOL dolls, candy, and more LOL dolls.

My nephew Chris is vastly different in many ways. He loves sports and is great at soccer, basketball and loves baseball, too! And of course, he loves all things Razorback. But if he had his way, there would be no bedtime, no cut off on using the phone, he would play video games all day with friends online, and showers would be optional. He’d spend all his money on Pokémon cards, Beyblades, and video games.

But here is the problem with that… there are always consequences to your actions. At 11 and 14, these two might have a few good decisions, but left to their own without any guidance, they would make decisions based on feelings, what their friends say, or what felt good in the moment. They would not consider the consequences.

We are in a time where people want to say it’s okay for children to make their own decisions. I watched a report about a mother who lets her children raise themselves and she just intervenes if they get hurt. What kind of parenting is that? And now, the government wants to pass a law that would allow a child to ignore their parent’s guidance and make a huge decision concerning their body and gender and allow them to have access to sexual reassignment surgery. My friend brought this up yesterday as she shared that our own secretary of health believes this should be allowed.

“Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.” (Deuteronomy 32:18)

Have we forgotten that it is the Lord who formed us? He is our creator. He knit us together in our mother’s womb. This is the very God who created the world, the heavens and all that exists! He is the one who breathed life into our lungs. He orchestrated every detail of your cells and knows every hair on your head. The Lord God Almighty!

Why don’t we just let our children do as they want? Because they need guidance. They need someone that will teach them the truth and what consequences could come because of our actions. Let’s band together and commit to raising up our children in the word of God. Teach them His truth. Teach them what will come when we don’t obey. Teach them of the blessings and the promises that God gives us! Teach of His unfailing love!

Will you join me?
