Cast My Ballot

I touched that button on the screen a few months ago and my vote had been made. Most of the time, I don’t really think too much about it. But as I walked away from the polls, I thought about the freedoms we have here in America to make our voice heard. Whether or not my choice goes with the majority, we have the opportunity and privilege to do so.

Not every country does.

And especially not women.

Our country was founded in 1776 and it wasn’t until 1920 that women officially had the right to vote.

I am by no means a feminist nor a women’s rights activist, but I am a woman. And I’m thankful and grateful to have the right to come alongside my husband and cast my vote according to our beliefs and moral convictions.

Women offer a great deal to society through their unique gifts, talents, ideas and emotions.

We were designed and built different than men because God has special purposes for us. Our approach to situations is far different than that of a man most of the time and we have a natural instinct to be nurturing to others. Not that men don’t, that’s just something within most women.

In many cultures, women are still considered less than. They are disregarded in many aspects of life and certainly do not have the rights that men have. This was the case in the Jewish culture of Jesus’ day. However, Jesus demonstrated that all were created by God and deserved equal respect.

“And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.”
Luke 8:1-3

Jewish tradition excluded women from being taught by rabbis. But Jesus didn’t come to this earth to continue man-made traditions. He came to show the truth about God and His creation. These women who followed Jesus and joined the 12 were an important part of their travels. They helped in various situations where a woman would be needed. Jesus had healed them in great ways and what better way to show their thanks than to follow Him in a life of fellowship and service to their Savior?

I love this quote from my study Bible. “As a non-Jew recording the words and works of Jesus’ life, Luke demonstrates a special sensitivity to other “outsiders” with whom Jesus came into contact. For instance, Luke records five events involving women that are not mentioned in other Gospels. In first-century Jewish culture, women were usually treated as second-class citizens with few rights men had. But Jesus crossed those barriers, and Luke showed the special care Jesus had for women. Jesus treated all people with equal respect.”

What a privilege it is that God would not only open up His love and redemption to non-Jews but women as well.

His love is for all people. His gift of salvation is for every man, woman and child, no matter their age, background, color, sex, or past. Jesus truly knew no borders. He crossed them all for us so that we could be saved.

He offers that to you today. Don’t take it for granted. Believe in Jesus today as your Savior and follow Him in a life of Fellowship and Service.
