Ask and Ye Shall Receive

There have been plenty of times I’ve been in situations or conversations where something was said and it was just assumed I knew the meaning. I was clueless to what they were talking about, but I was too embarrassed or afraid to speak up and say, “I don’t know.”

That really never ends well, does it? The whole “fake it until you make it” really doesn’t work out in all circumstances.

So why are we so afraid to speak up? Why don’t we step up and say, “I’m sorry, I’m not familiar with that. Will you explain?”

Pride.

Luke 9:43-45

“And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.”

The disciples have been with Jesus for awhile now, listening, watching and learning. Yet, here in this passage, we see Jesus telling these men what was soon to come. He was predicting His death for the second time. And what was their response?

Silence.

Verse 45 tells us they were afraid to ask.

So instead of looking like fools to Jesus for not understanding, they chose to not ask.

Instead, they began boasting of who would be the greatest with Jesus in His kingdom.

“46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.”

Talk about looking like a fool.

Although they had tried to conceal their lack of understanding, their ignorance was evident and on full display.

So, let’s stop for a just a minute. We can look at these men, roll our eyes and think, “how dumb”. But… when’s the last time we did this very thing?

Maybe you’ve decided to read and study scripture. Great! But as you read, you come across something you don’t quite understand. Do you quit? Do you just skip over it because maybe it’s not that important? Do you ask the Lord to help you understand? Do you reach out to someone you know studies the Bible and ask them for help?

I remember getting a ticket because I thought I had a 10 day grace period to get my license renewed. But, as you can guess, I was wrong. Ignorance is no excuse from the law… that’s what they say, right?

The Word of God is our law. It’s the very words of our Lord and Savior. We can’t say “I thought this” or “I didn’t know” because we are without excuse. He has given us all we need, but we have to ask. We have to read it, pray over it, and study it.

I remember getting frustrated in church because I couldn’t find the book or scripture the preacher was talking about. So, I closed it, frustrated and embarrassed. But whose fault is that? Who can change that?

Me.

We have to take that step to make a change. If we don’t know something, it’s our responsibility to ask. It’s the way we learn.

It’s time to make a change. It’s time to dig in and gain understanding.

Ask and ye shall receive.
