The Special Blessings of Being Near
59 Views

There is a unique protection and care for those who have chosen to abide in Christ, to stay near.

There are ten thousand voices and gods who call for our attention daily. Satan is most active here, for he knows to separate the believer in daily experience is to strip them of their power. But blessed is the man who deliberately, stubbornly chooses to draw near to God through the course of every common day. They find Him true to His promise. “Draw near to Me, and I will draw near to you” (James 4:8).

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty … Because you have made the Lord—my refuge, the Most High—your dwelling place, no harm will come to you. No plague will come near your tent. For He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways … Because he has his heart set on Me, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he knows My name. (Psalm 91:1,9-11,14)

Charles Spurgeon experienced this and spoke of it often.

Not every worshiper will be thus privileged, but those who dwell there, as Simeon and Anna dwelt in the temple. So, there are some that abide in Christ, and His words abide in them. They live near God. They receive, therefore, choicer favors than those who only come and go. He who has learned to stand in the holy of holies, near the blood-sprinkled mercy seat, to whom prayer is a matter of constant privilege and enjoyment—he dwells in the “secret place.” Such a man, living near to God shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Wise are the ones who refuse the incessant calls of other gods, the noise of the world, and the tyranny of the urgent. Who “make” the Lord their refuge and “set their heart” on Him. Who, like David, said he “set the Lord continually before me” (Psalm 16:8).

Others may laugh at your devotion, but then, they may never enjoy the value and power of intimacy with the Almighty.
