A Heart Like His
16893 Views

“Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flows the springs of life.” – Proverbs 4:23 (AMP)

Words matter. Just ask the courageous cancer patient that received more malignant test results. Ask the single parent who opened the bank statement labeled “insufficient funds”. Ask the soldier whose orders require yet another deployment. It is in those moments when it is incredibly difficult to (in the words of Elsa from Frozen) “let it go!”

Note to self…having a heart like His involves our words/speech. What we say and the manner in which we say it have the potential to be carried by others for decades or, on social media, forever. Sadly, haven’t we all gotten choked on spewing some reactive and biting comments? Our intent was to say, “You look like the breath of spring.” But it came out… “You look like the end of a hard winter.”

What filter do we use, if any? Is the motivation seasoned and tasteful, or corrupt and self-promoting? Words are power. They have the potential to lead an army into battle, to signal the release of an atomic weapon, to indicate “you’re hired”, or to prayerfully soothe an aching soul overwhelmed by grief. We would be wise to petition our Father before launching into a lot of self-directed static. Choosing submission as a heart issue will certainly be evident in how and to whom we share.

It might just be the balm needed for a rough “me first” culture of demonstrating our thoughts, both written and verbal. Encouragement is not overrated. God wants to use you as a human battery charger for some hearts this week. Ask Him to provide the divine appointments and the spiritual defibrillator to anoint your words and to be a blessing to others.
