Your Rescuer is Here

In 2010, a mine collapsed in Chile with 33 miners inside. These men were trapped. There was no other way out than the entrance and it had caved in.

Rescuers worked tirelessly day in and day out, but every day they had the same result, the miners were still trapped.

Not only were the miners feeling the physical effects, but can you imagine what they were dealing with mentally?

Thoughts of survival were in each of their minds as they rationed supplies. A few packets of tuna and one jar of peaches was shared amongst the 33 men. Trying to conserve energy, they sat in darkness for hours, hoping for a rescue soon.

An 8 cm hole was used to communicate with the miners and send supplies. The rescuers continued to work to dig the men out. National news coverage had people on the edge of their seats waiting to see if the men would be freed.

It had been 69 days since the cave entrance collapsed and rescuers pulled the men to safety. Can you imagine what it would have been like to finally see the light after being in darkness for so long? To feel freedom after being trapped wondering if you’d ever be rescued. To feel a warm embrace from a family member. What an incredible moment that must have been!

During the time underground, Miner Mario Gomez sent up a note to his wife, CNN Chile reported. He wrote: “Dear Lila, I am well, thank God. I hope to get out soon. Patience and faith. God is great. We are going to get out with God’s help. Tell everyone that I am well.”

“And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Luke 1:76-79

John, the newborn son of Elisabeth and Zacharias, would prepare the way for the coming Messiah. He would proclaim the message of salvation and point others to Jesus. I love verse 79: “To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

In our sins, we are in darkness. We are trapped. But there is a light, a light of salvation. Although we were dead in our sins, we have the opportunity to new life! If we want peace, we must follow that light. The miner knew who that light was. He knew who would rescue them. He had hope.

His name is Jesus.

And today, He offers that to you. This world feels like it’s the darkest it’s ever been. Wars, death, crime, immoral acts displayed before your eyes no longer hidden in the shadows, leaders who celebrate these things and turn a blind eye to the truth. Depression, suicide, and murder by abortion plague our nation. Truly these are dark days.

But, there is hope.

There is a light that shines in the darkness and is ready to guide you to peace. Call out to Jesus to rescue you. He offers freedom and is waiting to embrace you.

Your rescuer is here.
