Work to be Done
270 Views

My friends own a masonry business called Woods Masonry. They do a phenomenal job and have some incredible workers. When we built our house, we knew exactly who was going to build the monster of a fireplace we wanted. And we were not disappointed.

It’s a family business. Their son Blake joined them several years ago and quickly mastered the art of brick and rock laying. Recently, their daughter joined their team. I asked her mom how that was going. And she said “you know Allison”.

The boss has arrived.

That girl keeps everyone in line. Not only can she do the work the men do, but she doesn’t mess around.

I can just see her at a job site with all of the materials stacked high and ready to go and the men standing around as the work orders are given.

“What are you waiting on? Get to work!”

I love that girl!

Acts 1:9-11
“And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”

Jesus had spent 40 days with the disciples after His resurrection. I’m certain they had a gazillion questions and the Lord took time to continue teaching them in what they should do. The work orders had been given. “Go and make disciples.”

And then, Jesus ascended to heaven. The disciples all stood around and watched this incredible display of glory and knew without a doubt Jesus was God!

Two angels stood by and saw the men looking up.

And just like I can hear Allison, I can hear the angels. “Why are you standing around looking up? He will come back again in this same way. But, until then, you’ve got a job to do, get to work!”

Everything Jesus had taught them and shown them had prepared them for this moment. He was gone and it was now time for them to do what He had called them to do.

To be fishers of men. To make disciples. To teach others about Jesus and what it means to follow Him. And to show them how to teach others to do the same.

Why are you standing around?

Yes, YOU! Jesus didn’t give that command just to His disciples – it’s also for US! We are His followers and we have work to do!

Go and make disciples.

This life isn’t about us. It’s about glorifying our Father in Heaven. It’s about saying yes to His calling. It’s about fulfilling the purpose He has for us. It’s about joining Him on His mission to redeem mankind to Him.

Are you ready?

I hear often that many people don’t feel prepared to make disciples because they weren’t trained either. Maybe that’s you. Maybe you’ve been in church your whole life but you’ve really never been shown how to lead someone to the Lord and teach them to follow Him. Or maybe you know the information you’ve just never been challenged to go or you’ve never had some hold you accountable.

Jesus holds us accountable.

Do you realize that?

He gave a command, and if we claim to be His followers, why aren’t we obeying Him?

Today is the day. Put off the excuses. This is what matters.

Let me show you. Let me teach you how to be a truly devoted follower of Christ and how to teach others to do the same.

Go to follow.lifeword.org. This online tool allows you to learn what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and what it means to walk with Him daily. You can use this same tool to make disciples, just as the Lord commanded.

The orders have been given, what are you standing around for? There’s work to be done!
