A former college student that I once advised was pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor. As we talked about her personal statement, she shared a touching experience of her time in India at a health clinic.
It was hot, dusty, and dry. The line to be seen in this clinic was long. Children in tattered clothing clung to their mothers. Their little feet were bare and dirty. The doctor offering this free service worked all day. The student helped to ask questions and get each person ready to be seen. After many hours of working, the doctor said this one would be the last patient.
But as the student looked out and saw the number that remained, her heart broke. There were still so many people who needed care and medicine. But that’s all they could take care of.
I can’t imagine being there in that moment and seeing the remaining that had the desire to be healed but there just wasn’t enough time or supplies.
“Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.”
Luke 4:40
Jesus healed the sick. It’s something we know, something we have learned, something we believe. But I want us to really set the scene here to gain a better understanding of what was happening.
Just like with my student, there had to have been a great line waiting for healing. People were coming in droves after hearing of Jesus and His miracles and His power to command demons to leave a person.
And at the center of it all was this one man, Jesus. In this moment, He was demonstrating His power and authority. But, one thing that struck me is that Jesus, in all of His wonder and splendor, is a man. A man who feels all that we do: hunger, thirst, fatigue… and yet, look at how many he healed.
Every one of them.
There was no one left standing in line. There was no mother left out in the dark with her children clinging to her as she held her sick child in her arms.
He laid His healing hands on every one of them.
And today, He’s willing to do the same. He stands ready to receive all that are sick and are searching for healing. He says “Come”. He is not willing that any should perish, but that ALL will come in repentance.
His invitation has been sent. He will not leave you waiting. He is ready to heal you from your brokenness and make you whole.
Will you come?
