Who Can Dwell in God’s Tent?

This astounding, all-important question is posed by King David, who knew God perhaps more intimately than any other. But he knew God in the Old Testament era when the Spirit had not yet been given to all believers, to indwell us.

It is important because God’s presence is our greatest need. If you have His nearness, You have everything. Without Him, you are adrift and lost, without God in this world and the world to come. Could any question be more important?

ENTERING IN

Before I opened my Bible to read this passage this morning, I took time to consciously enter God’s presence in prayer, just as Christ instructs us in Matthew 6, just as we should do every day. I realized again that I can come with “peace facing God” this morning because I have obtained an introduction by faith into this “grace in which I now stand” (Romans 5:1-2).

I was reminded in prayer and wrote in my prayerbook that Christ is my Older Brother, My Vine in which I have been engrafted forever. I am a branch, and I dwell in Him (John 15). I am in God’s presence because my blessed Savior, in the utmost humility, left heaven to come get me, to pay for my sins and receive me unto Himself (Philippians 2). I have been transferred from “the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God’s dear Son (Colossians 1:12-13) … and on and on and on. As I prayed, many biblical passages came to my mind, reminding me of who I am and where I now live, purely by the grace of God.

I meditated on the distinct, glorious picture in my mind and heart this morning (fueled by what God has promised in His Word) of the Sovereign King sitting on His throne above all, yet, because of Christ and His cleansing, adopting work, I can run like a fully adopted child into that throne room with a carefree, liberated heart for I am accepted by my Father because of the gracious work of His Son.

So, when I opened my Bible after that season in prayer, consciously doing exactly what God told me to do (To set my eyes in heaven where Christ is seated at God’s right hand, Colossians 3:1-2), and then I read the beautiful question of David, “Lord, who can dwell in Your tent?” my answer was immediate and joyful:

I CAN!
