When You Feel Unworthy: God’s Grace Says Otherwise
119 Views

Have you ever felt unworthy?

A friend of mine posted something the other day about not feeling worthy to be her daughter’s mother. That hits hard. The honest and raw thoughts come to mind as you reflect on yourself, your past mistakes and doubts, and you wonder, “Am I the right one?”

I think most of us have come to some point in our lives where we felt like we were unworthy. Whether it was a job opportunity, a leadership position, an award given to us, or an honor bestowed upon us, the thoughts come quickly, “I don’t deserve this. I’m no one special.”

I feel it every time I look at my niece and nephews, every time I look at my son and daughter, and my husband. I’m not worthy.
Every time I step foot into our offices at Lifeword. Every time I speak.

I’m not worthy.

We focus on our past. In our minds, our mistakes, shortcomings, and struggles overshadow any changes that have been made within us.

Especially when it comes to serving Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:9
“For I am the least of all the apostles. In fact, I’m not even worthy to be called an apostle after the way I persecuted God’s church.”

Paul knew the feelings of unworthiness more than anyone. He was a great persecutor of Christians. He spent his life trying to destroy them and the spread of the gospel. So, when Jesus called Paul to be His chosen vessel to share the truth about Him, Paul felt unworthy.

I can imagine Paul’s thoughts echo mine.

“Me? Are you sure you have the right person? I can’t do that! I’m filled with shame, regret and memories of my past. I can’t be a good representation of You, Lord. You are good, perfect, holy—everything I am not. Surely, there is someone better than I to do this. Someone who knows more, has done great things for You, or who doesn’t have all these scars. I’m not worthy to even be Your servant.”

But see, that’s the thing about God. He chooses the weak and humble heart to carry His message. Because the truth is, none of us deserve to carry such a truth. Not one of us is worthy, but only through the beautiful and amazing grace of Christ can we join Him on His mission.

1 Corinthians 15:10a
“But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain;

Grace. The unmerited favor of God. We can’t earn, we don’t deserve it, yet it is lavished on those who will believe.

If you’re feeling unworthy and that you are far too broken and messed up for God to use you, just know, He’s far more powerful than you give Him credit for.

Didn’t He create the world and all that’s within it? Didn’t He part the Red Sea and bring His people across dry land? Didn’t He save Daniel from a den of lions? Didn’t He save Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who were thrown into the fiery furnace? Didn’t He provide all that was needed for Noah and his family to be saved from the flood? Didn’t He heal the lame and give sight to the blind? Didn’t He feed the thousands with just two fish and a few loaves of bread? Didn’t He die on the cross and rise up from the grave after three days?

He has all power and authority. He is full of truth and grace. And He’s calling you today to trust Him, believe that He is able to do more than we think or ask, and step out in faith to be used by Him.

When it’s just me standing here, of course I’m unworthy. But Christ lives within me. It is through His Holy Spirit that we can do all things! Because of His righteousness that now clothes us, we can walk in newness of life! We are His vessel! May we be poured out for Him!

There is nothing like following Christ. To know Him more, to understand our purpose, and to grow in knowledge and wisdom—these are all part of a relationship with Jesus. Do you want to learn more?
