Swarms of bugs fluttered around the porch light. After dark, you often have to run inside and quickly close the door behind you. Why is it that bugs are attracted to light?
Well, here’s an interesting fact.
Bugs have an internal navigation system. They use the moon and stars to fly in a straight line. As long as the natural light source is at their back, they are fine. However, when an artificial light is introduced, their navigation becomes disrupted. The angle of the light changes as the insects fly, which makes it impossible for them to stay on course. They become confused, sometimes flipping upside down or falling to the ground. As long as the false light remains, they cannot find the right way.
2 Corinthians 11:12–15
“But I will continue doing what I have always done. This will undercut those who are looking for an opportunity to boast that their work is just like ours. 13 These people are false apostles. They are deceitful workers who disguise themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve.”
Paul was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. He was a missionary with the goal of sharing the truth about who Jesus was with the people God led him to. He didn’t ask for money; that was never his motivation. He wanted them to know the truth and be saved.
There were people, however, who told a different story about Jesus. Their false teachings were more pleasing to the flesh than the truth of Scripture. These men weren’t interested in the salvation of souls; instead, they were greedy—lining their pockets with money and boasting about their knowledge and skills.
Paul refuted these false teachers. He warned the Corinthians about them. He said they were disguising themselves, just as Satan does, as an angel of light.
Only Christ is the true source of light. Satan and his false teachers are an artificial light source that causes confusion, consequences, and even death. Those who follow this false teaching lose their way, much like the bugs circling the porch light.
Jesus Christ alone is the Light of the World. He is the Son of God, who gave up His rightful place in Heaven to come to earth as a man so that we could be saved. Our sins against God have earned us eternal death. But Jesus chose to take our punishment. He lived a perfect life and then gave it up on the cross, taking our sins with Him. He died, was buried, and three days later He rose from the grave. He defeated death. He is victorious. If we believe in Jesus as the only way to Heaven, then we can be forgiven and saved. Do you believe this? Don’t be drawn to any other form or false gospel of Jesus. This is the truth of Scripture—the truth Paul and so many others risked their lives to proclaim.
