Self-Esteem

How many times have you felt like you are not enough? You aren’t attractive enough or skinny enough or smart enough. Have you ever wondered how anyone could even like you because maybe you have a little extra fluff or maybe you don’t have enough? There have been times when I’ve gotten a little down about myself, so I did what most girls do—cried and ate chocolate! Sounds good, right? Well, it’s not. I was listening to a lie that was whispered to me by the enemy. Believing the lie that I wasn’t good enough was like looking through a distorted lens. I let my past and what people had said affect my self-esteem, so I had to combat these lies with truth! I had to look to scripture to understand what God thinks of me, not others.

First, we see in Genesis 1:27 that you were created in HIS image.

So, God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

God created and knew you even before you were born! Only God could create you. Psalm 139:13-14 says,

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

You are valued by God! Luke 12:6-7 says,

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

God does not make mistakes with anything or anybody. You. Are. One. Of. A. Kind! You are cherished. You are loved. You are valued. You have purpose. I could go on and on about what you are to Him. But, one thing that you are not allowed to do is label yourself because God has already done that. You were created in HIS image so when you believe the lies of no self-worth, what does that say about God? What does that say about what you really believe about God? Just remember that you are fearfully and wonderfully made when the enemy tries to tell you lies about your value. God is fully aware of what happens to a sparrow and you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of birds! He knows you so well that He even knows how many hairs are on your head—and He loves all of you. He is invested in you, so believe Him. Be who God created you to be.

Reflection Questions

  1. How has God defined you?
  2. When you start questioning your worth, what thought or person triggers this? Is there truth to this? Does it agree or disagree with scriptures?
  3. What truth about yourself do you need to work on?
