What is Truth?

What is truth?

This statement was made centuries ago, but is still being asked to this day. People are confused for some reason about what truth is.

Is it really that difficult?

Let’s look at the definition – “the quality of being true, genuine, actual, or factual.”

Some say truth is relative.

Wait, what? How can truth be relative? That means “conditional, subjective, varying and contradictory” and can change over time. If that were the case, it would not be truth. Instead it would be called opinion.

It’s not philosophical, it’s not even intelligent, it’s a complete misuse of the word.

John 18:37-40
“Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.”

Jesus was on trial.

Pilate, the Roman governor for this are, responded to Jesus’ statement and asked, “what is truth?”

You want to know the truth?

The religious leaders were desperate to keep their positions, their power over the people and their way. Jesus threatened all of that as He spoke far differently than anything they had ever heard. The people were listening and following Jesus. And it infuriated the Pharisees.

The truth – they were determined to kill Jesus.

They drug him through the streets in the middle of the night for a reason. They wanted this done quickly. They had a Passover celebration, feast and ceremony and it all had to be done before them. Even when they went to Pilate, they wouldn’t enter into judgment hall, but made Pilate come to them because according to their law, entering the house of a Gentile would make them unclean. But the truth was that they were already unclean! These men were going to murder Jesus.

The truth – Jesus is the Son of God who came to this world to redeem mankind. He came to seek and save the lost, those that do not know the Father. Man’s sin has separated us from God and the only way to restore that is to provide a blood sacrifice. Not just any sacrifice though – it had to be of a spotless lamb.

Jesus was that lamb.

Perfect, sinless. His death would not just save one person, but all of mankind, from their sins.

The truth – Jesus died for us. Not just the good people, not just the Jews, but ALL people. Through Him, we can be saved from the wrath of God that will be poured out on unbelievers. Through Jesus, we can be restored to a relationship with the Father. And all it takes to receive this beautiful gift of salvation is to believe in Jesus. That He did all that He said He would, that He is who He says He is, and that He has the power to do these things.

That’s the truth.
