“What happens next?!”
We sat huddled in a group on the floor of the library, waiting expectantly. Mrs. Tucker, our librarian, had just read us a portion of our favorite book series, “Hank the Cowdog,” but had stopped.
If we had been in chairs, we would have been on the edge of our seats.
“We’ll find out more tomorrow.”
Several gasps and groans came from our fourth-grade class. That felt like an eternity. How could we be expected to wait that long? We needed to know what happened to Hank! He was on another one of his adventures and had already met trouble and crazy situations several times. How was it all going to turn out for him?
The anticipation was killing us!
Acts 28:14
“There, we found some brothers and sisters who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome.”
This is where we left off yesterday. I found myself thinking this morning, “I wonder what’s next for Paul? He’s finally going to make it to Rome! What will happen to him? Will he be able to share about Jesus? Will he find support or opposition there? Will they mistreat him? Will there be Romans that accept the gospel, too?”
While I’ve read it before, there’s always this anticipation that grows, this excitement about what will happen next.
Do you feel it?
The Bible has an incredible way of drawing you back. When you open its pages, you start to read, and it’s hard to put down. This is history. These are real people and real events that took place. This was the start of the early church, an account of the first missionaries and the spread of the gospel. There’s so much to unpack with trials that came their way, truths that become real to you as you read, “ah-ha” moments of realization and understanding, and a desire for more.
Do you feel it?
This is God’s Word. Through each sentence, He beckons you to spend time with Him, hear His voice, know more of Him, and see His plan unfold and the beautiful promises He had for them and us.
It is the light to show us the way. It’s the very bread of heaven to fill us. It’s a well that never runs dry. It’s our compass, our corrector, and our lifeline.
From the very lips of our Lord to our ears… this is the Word of God.
So, what happens next? Will Paul make it in Rome? Will he meet his end?
We’ll find out tomorrow.
Or, you can always read ahead.
