What Are You Doing With the Life God Gave You?

But what did you do with the money I gave you?

I felt like a deer caught in the headlights.

What had I done with that money? I knew it was supposed to be used for things I needed. But, as I started thinking about it, I couldn’t remember even one bill I had paid. Had I really wasted it all?

I wanted to say that I had given it to someone in need and that’s why I was back asking for more money. I wanted to say I paid this and that bill that was due and I just had some unexpected expenses.

But I couldn’t.

I had wasted it. And now I was accountable.

2 Corinthians 5:9–10
“So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please Him. For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.”

We have all been offered a gift—a beautiful, precious gift of life. Take a deep breath. Do you feel the air coming into your lungs? Open your eyes. Are you able to see the world around you? Take hold of something in your hand. Are you able to feel the warmth of the coffee in your cup? Feel the roughness of the hand you hold—the hand of the one you love. Listen! Are you able to hear the birds singing in the air? The joyous laughter of children? The beautiful song speaking to your heart?

Life. I am 100% certain that if you are reading this right now, you are alive. What are you doing with this life?

Daily, our account continues to go deeper and deeper into debt. It’s a sin debt. It’s a debt we can’t pay. But there is One who can, and One who did. He offers us the most beautiful gift: eternal life.

Jesus was willing to leave His throne in heaven to come to this earth and die for us, to pay the debt that we owe for our sins.

That opportunity is presented to every one of us. It is our choice what we do with that gift.

If we choose to accept it, that means Jesus has redeemed us. We are bought with a price; we are saved! We serve our Lord—and we do so out of gladness! Or we should do so out of gladness. What are we doing with the life He gave us? Are we using it to do His work? Are we loving and investing in others to build His kingdom?

If we choose not to accept Christ’s gift of salvation, we are still making a choice. We are choosing our way above the Lord’s. But it doesn’t mean we won’t be accountable.

Just as the Scripture in 2 Corinthians said, all people—those who have been saved and those who are lost—will stand before the Lord and give an account for what they have done in this life. Those who are lost, those who did not trust in Christ, will pay for their sins in hell. Those who trusted in Christ will have a home in heaven but will be rewarded or judged based on what they did after the Lord saved them.

Matthew 16:27
“For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.”

Romans 14:10–12
“But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written:
‘As I live,’ says the Lord, ‘Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God.’
So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.”

1 Corinthians 3:10–15
“Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ.
Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.”

Believers, we will give an account before the Lord. While eternity in heaven is our home, we must still answer for what we have done with the life—with the gifts and talents He gave us. This isn’t about good works saving us; it’s about being saved, and therefore, we desire to do good works for the Lord! How are you using your gifts to further the kingdom?

If you have never accepted Christ as your Savior, today is the day to change that. He is offering forgiveness and a new life—one that is filled with joy and peace because He walks with you.
