Water from the Rocks

When I was a kid, we had a magician come to our school.

Bart Rockett.

It was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. Well, of course, I hadn’t seen that much, but it was by far the coolest. He did all kinds of tricks and illusions and I was really amazed. We kept looking at each other with mouths gaped wide saying, “How did he do that?!”

Moses is leading the people of Israel out of Egypt and to the Promised land. But their journey is one of testing and trials. God has proven Himself over and over and yet the people still doubt Him when things come up.

Like the bitter waters at Marah, or no food in the wilderness. Both times, they murmured against Moses about God. And now, they are thirsty. Thirsty for something to drink, to give them life again, to refresh them, to restore them.

“Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?
And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.” (Exodus 17:2-6)

Did you catch that? God caused water to come out of a rock.

Hello?! Have you ever seen that done? How did He do that? This was no magic trick. This was God proving once again He is The Almighty, Creator of the World, All-powerful God!

This morning, I’m just like that kid, watching this incredible show happen before my very eyes. I’m awestruck and completely amazed at who God is. He continued to show His power to the children of Israel, even though they continued to complain. He continued to give them chance after chance. And it’s through this rock that I realize how thankful I am for His grace.

Moses was ready to give up on them. He was sick of their belly aching. They cried out to him in anger and frustration wanting water. God could have said no. He could have said “suck it up, buttercup”. But instead, he graciously gave them a drink.

Only God.

Only God can do these miraculous things. He has proven Himself time and time again and yet we still worry and doubt as our fears rise. But He can bring water from the rocks. If my God can do this, imagine what else He can do if we would simply trust and obey!

Wherever He has brought you to today, He will supply your needs graciously. Trust in Him.
