In the 5th grade, my sister and I were in the Payless Shoe store, and the lady at the checkout asked if we were twins.

Immediately, I said, “No, we don’t look anything alike.” I was mad the rest of the day.

How could this woman think that? We are the complete opposite. Just ask my sister, she will tell you, too!

She has brown hair, I have blonde. She’s loud, and I’m not so loud. She can be dramatic, and I tend to be more subdued. She never meets a stranger, and I’m reserved. She hated school, and I loved it. She’s eccentric, and I’m pretty ordinary.

The list goes on and on. We are almost the complete opposite of one another. We would fight like cats and dogs when we were kids. We couldn’t agree on anything. But despite all our differences, we do have something in common.

We both share the same mother and father. Growing up in a small town, everybody knows you. We were known as the “Young girls” when we were children. There weren’t many similarities between us to identify us other than our family.

Acts 11:25-26
“Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,
26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”

Antioch. An interesting mixture of people made up this city. Jews and Gentiles were as opposite as you could get. They didn’t speak the same language, follow the same laws or practices, and they looked, acted and sounded completely different. But there was one thing they had in common.

Christ.

The name Christian actually came from the term “Christ-ones.” This is how others referred to the people of the church. There weren’t any other apparent similarities between the people except for their love and service to the Lord.

Isn’t that amazing?

The love of Christ has this incredible way of breaking down barriers we have constructed between race, culture, and language. Despite our differences with fellow believers, there is unity in Christ. He alone makes that happen.

Together, we share the same Father.

At Lifeword, we are thankful for the opportunity to be a part of Christ’s mission to reach the lost around the world. Language, culture, race – so many differences, but because of Jesus, we have something in common.

And one day, together, we will all praise the Lord before His throne in Heaven.

Will you join us?

Christians are simply followers of Christ. We have peace during conflict, hope when things look hopeless, love and forgiveness when we’ve been wronged, and undeserved grace from God.

Come be a part of this mixture of people from every tribe, every tongue, and every nation.

Come be a Christian.
