Unbelievable Truths

The white lines dividing the highway road are about 10 feet long. Also, the space between each line is 30 feet.

Does that seem crazy to you?

Think about it – as you’re driving, the lines seem short, and they come one right after another. We perceive the lines as 2-3 feet long and the same distance apart.

I found that little tidbit interesting, but I wanted to know if it was true, so I looked it up. Could this be true?

And it was!

What else is something that seems far-fetched or unbelievable, but when you look it up, it’s true?

Let’s ask the Bereans.

Acts 17:10-12

“As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.

11 Now, the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

12 As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.”

Paul, Silas, Timothy, and Luke are traveling on this missionary journey. After being berated, stripped, beaten, and imprisoned for sharing the gospel, they were encouraged to leave that town. And the next place they came to was Berea.

The people here were different than in Philippi. The scripture describes them as “more noble” in their character. Luke was sharing that they were perhaps more intellectual and upright in character than other places they had visited.

Why would he write that?

There was something different about the Bereans.

“They received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”

What they heard from Paul must have been some incredible story that initially seemed far-fetched or unbelievable. But instead of denying it, they decided to go to the scriptures themselves and see if it were true. They wanted to see if what Paul said aligned with the Word of God.

And it did.

They found truth in Paul’s message when they went to the Word. Because of this, many of them, including several prominent Greeks who were there, believed in the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

When we think about the number of prophecies Jesus fulfilled, we might say, there is no way. But as we study it through God’s Word, we see evidence that He is the Messiah, the Christ.

Let’s follow the example of the Bereans. Don’t just listen; go to God’s Word. Examine what’s been said, study it, and know the truth. Why? There are many false teachers out there claiming we can earn our way to heaven, that if we follow God, our lives will prosper, and that there are many ways to heaven.

Go to the Word of God. Open your Bible and study it. If you need help, I’d love to guide you. You can go to follow.lifeword.org to learn more about the truth of who Jesus is and what it looks like to follow Him. Learn how to study your Bible, pray, and serve.
